Preparing DREAMCATCHER for the Hard Stand
PREPARATION OF 46 FT SAILBOAT FOR STORAGE ON THE HARD…. BEFORE HAUL OUT

DECKS
Remove GPS antennas & stow below
Varnished cockpit coaming - any way to protect?
Staylock sheet feeders ("piano keys") any way to protect?
Turn off one solar panel when leaving boat long term
Consider removing lifelines. Sun and dirt will age them quickly
Remove everything possible from the deck and store below.
Take the sun covers off cockpit windows and store below
Store life raft down below…
Place netting over dorade vents to prevent bird nesting
Cockpit cushions down below
Hatch covers on
Tape over stanchion bases
Tape hatches over saloon-make sure they are water tight
Losen anchor chain, and secure anchor
Wrap all winches
Fold davits and tie down
Remove all sheets and lines from deck
Tie down booms
DINGHY & OUTBOARD ENGINE
Flush with fresh water and run all gas out of the engine, empty & air gas tanks
Grease all fittings
stow below
Move Dinghy to foredeck, semi-deflate, cover with tarp tied down tight
SAILS
Remove all sails and store below/Lazarette
Mark all sheets to where they belong!
Soak all sheets in fresh water and dry before stowing
After removing main sail, put cover back on boom to protect boom everything.
Wrap line around boom cover to protect from high winds.
Profurl hardware & all other fittings - lube with wd40.
FUEL
Fill diesel tanks and add biocide.
Empty diesel jugs and flush them out thoroughly with hot soapy water, and then a touch of petrol, and leave them
open so there's no chance of diesel bug forming
Remove all flammable liquids like Turps, butane containers etc
Propane - empty & vent
Clean Racor filters
Fill day tank with fuel that has been treated
BELOW DECKS
Wipe down all interior surfaces with vinegar and water (2/3 1/3)
Teak Oil all wood surfaces
Put up mossie netting on all port holes that will be left open
Disconnect antenna leads
Remove electronics to dissuade theft
Videos, CD's and cassette tapes should be stowed down low or removed.
Remove medical kit wih temperature sensitive medications
Put out cockroach trap or boric acid mixed with sweetened condensed milk and dried out - particularly in the fridge
and sinks
Do not stow anything on top of closed cell foam cushions ( the item on top of the cushion will leave a permanent
indentation
Lubricate portlight gaskets with silicone grease
Pump the bilge out
Remove batteries from all battery operated gear and store down low, including flashlights, smoke detectors, etc
Change engine oil in the Perkins and the Kubota
Do not use plastic bags to cover stuff.
Windows - aluminium foil on all portlights to restrict incoming light…blinds to be up.
Books - sort, bag with silica gel
Bag, silica gel & hide any valuables like navigation tools, pens, etc.
Release tension on anchor windlass clutch so it doesn't seize up while on the hard
Clean out fridges with bleach, dry and prop tops open
Close all thru hulls except cockpit and scupper drains.
Plug all closed thru hulls with cloth to dissuade insects from taking up residence inside. (Duck tape is good to
cover thru hulls.)
Put bronze or vinyl wool in cockpit drain thru hulls to allow water to run through and to keep bugs out.
Plug up any other orifices, ie vents for tanks and gaps around hatch, otherwise you may find several generations
of insects inside - particularly spiders.

Shake rugs, sweep & wash floor with disinfectant
Clean Toilets with fresh water then add vinegar and mineral oil after closing thru-hull
Top up battery water
Run the engine with fresh water through it in the slings. Block off the generator raw water pipe first to avoid getting
water into the Kubota sump.
Radio & instrument panel - cover vertical keyboards against dust…remove mike's, bag & silica gel
BEFORE LEAVING BOAT
Empty/flush toilet holding tank/s…deodorise
Remove ALL food that's not in tins
Empty water tanks and add bleach. To flush scummy tanks upon return, dish washing detergent and water seems
to do the trick.
Cover cockpit/aft with tarpulin over boom and tie down
Turn off Master 12V switch under chart table
bildge circuit breaker is the only one that stay on
Remove fuses from SSB radio at the battery
Turn off the shore power switch
Disconnect the shorepower cable in the engine room and store cable
Close all hatches, weather/insect protected
Empty & wash (bleach/disinfectant) all food containers & cupboards & shelves
Wipe all surfaces, bar, shelfs etc with disinfectant
Mothball/Silica Gel all open areas, wardrobes, cupboard below decks
Open all drawers and cupboards to help circulate air
Lift all seat cushions and mattresses to circulate air (mattress protector bags on)
Charts - stow, silica gel & wrap
Remove teak table from cockpit, wrap in towel & stow below
Remove steering wheel & stow below in safe but obvious place
Take the Bimini down
Find way to protect compass binacle - plastic hat? Plastic bucket over top?
Remove Garbage from all bins: galley, head etc: wipe bins out with disinfectant
Put several containers wtih charcoal or kitty-litter throughout the boat to prevent mildew
Charge all batteries right up including million cp light and drill batteries
Ensure seating in salon covered with towelling passaging covers
Laundry: all bedding inc mattress cover, tea towels, oven gloves/mits , clothing
Bed Quilt - place loosely in black plastic bag, insert Silica Gel
Lift mattresses to ensure air flow
Tape over the diesel exhaust pipe to prevent salt air getting blown into the engine
Test the batteries with the hydrometer.
Galley sink - pour down mix of boiling water & Simple Green to get rid of pipe gunge
Photographic inventory of all cabinets
ADMIN
Book Plane Tickets & transport to airport
Customs - advise in writing we're leaving
DIMIA - advise in writing, leaving Australia
Boat Survey - arrange, set up new insurance
Boat Insurance
Write list for Marina staff to check on monthly inspections/airings
Medicare - check status
Finalise any outstanding banking business
Telstra - any outstanding business?
Pay all bills including Marina for 3 months in advance - ensure Marina has all contact information
Arrange to have mail forwarded
UPON RETURNING TO MARINA
Air Boat
Hire helper for a day or two for on-deck work
Check hull for blisters after drying out - condsider opening & fixing
Turn on all electronics, radios, weather fax, radar, breakers etc, to test if working
Remove raw water impellors, lubricate with vaseline. Heat and being in one place for so long tends to permanently
misshape the vanes.
Wire lights in forepeak
Connect up to shore power
Check the battery water and charge level
Replace or fix the fresh water pump
Flush through and fill water tanks, add bleach.
Put batteries back into flashlights etc
Replace fuses for the bilge pump
Replace fuse for the SSB
Switch on E10
Replace consumables from Grab Bag
Charge all batteries
Take the plastic bag out of the chain gypsy
Reinstall the life raft
Order the antifoul paint and any other supplies required
Wash down the topsides…wipe down belowdecks with vinegar, teak oil day later
Check and replace packing in stuffing box and rudder stock - packing seems to dry out in the heat and will score
your shaft.
Remove the duct tape over the thru hulls, engine exhaust, vents etc
Reconnect the engine starter battery
Fire Extinguishers - check use-by date: turn upside down gently to mix liquid.
Clean the deph sounder transducer
Turn the engine over using both the start and the stop button to get oil into the engine and turbo before you start
it properly. Make sure you turn off the seacock to the gen set so that you don't get fresh water going into it.
Buy: Zippo butane, WD40,
Reconnect the solar panel/s
Take the outboard on deck, run, lock
Fill the fridge with water bottles and turn it on.
Replace the fuse for the fridge raw water pump
Take the seacocks apart and lubricate
Flush out the diesel jugs again and check that there's no diesel bug formed.
Take head hoses off, clean out and reinstall
Clean out the thru hulls and pipes
Check hull for damp spots after hull dries for blisters.
Sand the bottom and repair
Antifoul the bottom
Replace all out-of-date drugs from First Aid kit
Replace all zincs
Cleanup and grease the maxiprop
PREPARATION FOR RETURNING TO THE WATER
Disconnect the genoa foil for the travel lift
Disconnect the staysail foil for the travel lift
Sort out the docking lines/fenders for going back into the slip
Organise for some crew to fend off during reentry
Test run the engine so that there'll be no surprises
Check winches for free movement
Check bilge pump is working
Arrange to retrieve 2 x h/h GPS's & pair binoculars from Perth
Tighten up the stern gland as it will dry out over the summer and leak
Reinstall any standing rigging removed for the storage duration
Check all running rigging for wear
Retension the backstay
Reinstall all sails after washing/lubricating all standing rigging fittings, eg, boom fittings, Profurl etc.
Replace jib sheets
Replace topping lift connector line at aft end of main boom
Replace batteries in flashlights, appliances, smoke detectors
Re-mark all positions on sheet-feeders "piano keys"
Reinstall the Dodger, lubricate swivel clips with WD40
Reinstall the Bimini
Replace fuse in forward head
Check engine alignment after you've been back in the water for a couple of days.
Provision as necessary
Refill Propane & test tank/hoses/clamps for leaks
Run Dinghy Engine - check dinghy for inflatability
Check Flares for validity
Check EPIRB - test
